Things to Do in Derbyshire

There’s so many things to do in Derbyshire. Whether you’re planning a visit to the world heritage site of the Derwent Valley Mills, or the magnificent Chatsworth House or a family day out to Alton Towers, there is something for everyone. The Peak District and National Forest means there is an abundance of rolling hills, scenic walks, varying wildlife and quaint stone villages to explore.

Explore the Peak District

The stunning Peak District National Park became the first national park in the United Kingdom in 1951. The rolling hills, vast moorlands and fresh water lakes attract millions of visitors each year. Perfect for walkers and hikers, there are both fun and challenging walks that stretch across diverse landscapes with beautiful scenic views of the national park.

Derbyshire History and Heritage

A trip to Derbyshire wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Chatsworth House. The stunning stately home stands on the east bank of River Derwent, which looks across rolling hills and valleys. Chatsworth has been home to the Cavendish family since the 16th century and inside contains collections of historic paintings, furniture, drawings, sculptures and other interesting artefacts.

For those who may not be interested in tours of the stately home, the house is surrounded by impressive parkland and gardens, so there is plenty of exploring to do outside.

Bolsover Castle is another popular attraction in Derbyshire. The fairy-tale Stuart mansion lies on the ruins of the 12th-century medieval castle. Visitors can explore the lavish rooms of the Little Castle, explore the terrace range and admire the views from the wall walk. Little ones can enjoy a fun play area in the beautiful grounds.

Family Friendly Activities 

For an action packed day for the whole family, visit Go Ape in Buxton in the Peak District. This is one of the highest Go Ape courses in the UK, which features one of the biggest swings. The adventure park includes a whole host of giant zip wires, nestled high up amongst the trees.

For those looking to explore heritage walks and underground caverns, the Heights of Abraham is a great attraction for the whole family. Situated in Matlock Bath, the attraction consists of a hilltop park on top of Masson Hill. The Heights of Abraham can be accessed by cable car, which has magnificent views of the Derwent Valley. Visitors can also stroll through the dramatic woodlands that overlook the Peak District.
