What is national #getoutsideday?

National #GetOutsideDay is a chance for us all to celebrate the great outdoors. Founded by Ordnance Survey, the campaign aims to encourage people to get outdoors, so that they live longer, stay younger and enjoy life more!

This year’s theme is ‘precious places’, and the aim is to find the best places across the UK to encourage people to explore and protect them. People can achieve this through going for a hike, biking, picnicking, birdwatching, or simply taking a leisurely walk in a park. It is a perfect opportunity for everybody to experience the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in the great outdoors.

Where should you go?

Cumbria

Cumbria is an ideal location for exploring the outdoors, there are plenty of activities for you to do, including: walking, bird watching, cycling, and participating in a variety of water sports!

The Lake District, situated in Cumbria, is known for its stunning lakes, mountains, and outdoor activities. Making it an idyllic place to hike, boat, and enjoy nature. The area also has picturesque villages and an interesting history, making it a charming destination.

Cornwall

Cornwall is a great place to explore if you love to be by the sea. With its rocky coastline, golden beaches, and scenic countryside, it is a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can surf, hike along breathtaking coastal paths, and explore historic sites.

Some of the best attractions to visit in Cornwall include: the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project, Adrenalin quarry and many of the beautiful beaches.

Yorkshire

Whether you are into hiking the dramatic landscapes, mountain biking across rugged terrain, or simply enjoying a leisurely countryside stroll, Yorkshire provides endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. From the serene Yorkshire Dales to the wild expanse of the Yorkshire Moors, you can find an abundance of natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and a profound heritage waiting to be explored.

There are plenty of places in Yorkshire to explore including: Redmires Upper Reservoir, Gormire Lake and Fountains Abbey with the Studley Royal Water Garden.

Isle of Wight

The Isle of White is a beautiful place to visit, with stunning beaches, rolling hills and rugged coastline. Some of the best outdoor activities to participate in the Isle of White include countryside walks in Compton Bay, Headon Warren and Ventnor Downs, stargazing and walking along many of the beautiful beaches the Isle of White has to offer.

One of Isle of Wights landmarks is The Needles. It is one of the world’s most photographed attractions, and a perfect place to visit whilst getting outdoors.

Gwynedd

Gwynedd in the north of Wales, covers the west mountains of Snowdonia all the way along to the Irish sea. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of outdoor activities to do, from mountain climbing, to canyoning, to walking along the Garth pier.

Gwynedd also contains several of Wales’s largest lakes and reservoirs, including the largest, Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid). The lake is a popular place for water sports such as paddleboarding, canoeing, windsurfing, and fishing.
