Milling history in the UK

In 370 BC, the ancient Greeks introduced a game-changing invention: the water wheel. This innovative use of water marked a pivotal moment in history. Watermills were used for grinding grains like wheat, corn and barley into flour, to make bread.

In 1086, there were over 900 watermills across England and Wales, and by 1850, the United Kingdom had an astounding 30,000 watermills. In 1870 watermills still produced 2/3 of the power available for British grain milling.

By the early 20th century, the availability of cheap electrical energy made the watermill industry obsolete.
