Secret Gardens in the UK

As spring unfolds join us as we embark on a journey through the UK’s most captivating secret gardens. These hidden havens invite you to witness the blossoming of flowers and flourishing plants. In the heart of historic estates, behind ancient walls, and concealed within nature’s embrace, these gardens unveil tales of centuries past and botanical treasures.

In this blog, we have also created a list of several pubs with accommodation near each of the secret gardens. Providing a delightful retreat after your day off exploration. 

Secret Gardens of the UK  

Westonbury Mill Water Gardens, Herefordshire 

Step into a world of wonder at the Westonbury Mill Water Gardens, reopening in April 2024. This garden is filled with grassed pathways, bridges and vibrant plants creating a kaleidoscope of colours, shaded by trees and shrubs. Stroll around the ponds, rest on benches scattered throughout the garden, or climb the spiral mound to be greeted by picturesque views. 

Behind the Cornus hedge, the Bog Garden hides the Big Pond. On one side of the pond are giant irises and rushes. Whilst on the other is the channel which feeds the mill, in the midst of exuberantly colourful primulas, hemerocalli and ligularia.

Bridges lead to The Canal at the edge of the wildflower Meadow. Wander along the stream and ascend the Spiral Mound for a view of the wildflower meadow and distant hills. Return to the main garden, crossing the leat through a tunnel of giant Gunnera leaves to discover the Lily Pond and the Monet Bridge.

Mottistone, Isle of Wight  

Step into the Mottistone Gardens, a captivating secret garden found in the Isle of Wight. As you follow winding paths, you’ll ascend to Oak Corner, where a weeping lime tree extends its branches to the ground, forming archways for children to explore. 

The lower gardens have recently been replanted in a swirling pattern of feathery ornamental grasses, while beneath the avenue of trees in the orchard, a field of wildflowers appears each summer. Amongst the gardens find nine flowerpot characters, each discreetly hidden.  

The tea garden within is a delightful spot to unwind. The garden has been selected by the Trust to test which plants will adapt to our changing climate and following the planting of 25 olive trees in 2005 the head gardener has been experimenting with plants from the Mediterranean and southern hemisphere.

Killerton, Devon 

Immerse yourself in Killerton’s garden, an 18-acre hillside oasis nestled within 4000 acres of woodland. Crafted by John Veitch, this garden was designed to enhance the natural landscape. Many plants, which are now found throughout the British Isles were first planted at Killerton. Within this garden find rhododendrons, magnolias, and champion trees. Unveil hidden paths leading to historic ruins, navigate fallen veteran trees, and put your den-building skills to the test in the secluded Park Wood. 

Inside Killerton is a secret rock garden, a bear’s hut that once contained a real bear cub and an old icehouse. Climb an extinct volcano, discover an Iron Age hill fort and take in distant views towards Dartmoor, from Killerton gardens.

Blickling Estate, Norfolk 

secret gardens Tucked away within the grounds of Blickling Estate, a 14th-century estate spanning 55 acres, lies a collection of gardens. The estate boasts a rich tapestry of habitats, ranging from ancient woodlands to water meadows.  

At the heart of this estate is the Jacobean mansion, surrounded by ancient yew hedges. As you walk through the estate, discover the English oaks, groves of beech, and ancient sweet chestnuts that have stood the test of time. Continue wandering to discover the lime trees and the distinctive turkey oak, with their twisting branches. Head over to the Blickling Estate Temple, offering scenic views, before wandering to the Walled Garden and the serene lakeside retreat.

Stowe, Buckinghamshire  

After almost two centuries of being untouched, the Lamport Garden at Stowe reopened its gates in 2013, revealing a picturesque landscape. Stowe garden is more reminiscent of an overgrown woodland than a traditional garden, with towering gnarled trees, mossy areas, cascades, and rock pools. Step through the old wooden door, transporting yourself into a fairytale garden.

The allure of Stowe has captivated visitors for over 300 years, boasting picture-perfect views, meandering paths, lakeside strolls, and ancient temples. The expansive size and open spaces make Stowe an ideal haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Geilston Garden, Dumbarton 

Discover the charm of Geilston Garden, a 200-year-old hidden garden nestled within Dumbarton. Bordering the garden is a 40m long herbaceous perennial border, a burst of vibrant colours. Step through the green doors in the garden wall to enter a woodland adorned with a waterfalls, bridges and winding mossy paths. 

At the heart of this garden lies the walled garden, dating back to 1797, dominated by a mammoth Wellingtonia tree. Delve into the past with the restored Mackenzie and Moncur glasshouse, offering a fascinating glimpse into the garden’s historical charm. Uncover a secret window in the 1797 potting shed, overlooking the serene Geilston Burn.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Kent

Originally designed in 1930s by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, Sissinghurst Castle Garden was crafted from the ruins of an Elizabethan mansion, with the 16th-century castle tower standing as the sole vestige of the garden. 

The garden reveals its secrets through interconnected rooms, where gaps in hedges and doorways in ancient stone walls invite you to venture deeper. As you wander, discover fountains, statues, and ponds nestled among the plants and trees. 

From the White Garden, adorned with cascades of rosa mullingani, to the vibrant hues of the Purple Border and the timeless charm of the Rose Garden, each space offers something unique.

The Garden House, Devon 

Nestled on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Garden House unfolds as a secret garden. Once the residence of the vicars of Buckland Monachorum, this historic 10-acre oasis boasts a rich tapestry of plants and colours.

The Garden House showcases over 6,000 different varieties of plants and flowers. From the annual snowdrop festival in February to the stunning Autumn hues of Japanese maples in the Jubilee Arboretum, each season unfolds a unique charm.  

The Garden House stands as a must-visit garden in the Southwest, where you can explore ruins, climb the tower for panoramic views, and enjoy a moment by the glistening lake. As well as, visit the cosy cafe offering refreshments and the garden centre.

Enter through Neptune’s Gate, descend the stone staircase past the Mary Pool, and immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere, wandering amidst plants and flowers. 

For those seeking outdoor adventures, the Dragon cycle trail awaits, along with scenic walks such as the river walk. Enjoy wild play in the West Wood with four play areas and visit the family-friendly wildlife hide to look out of red squirrels.
