There’s so many things to do in South Yorkshire. The county is a fantastic destination to visit in the UK and is home to the vibrant city of Sheffield, as well as the incredibly beautiful Peak District. Enjoy the cultural hustle and bustle of Sheffield’s arts and music scene, walking in Penistone or discovering the rich heritage on offer in Barnsley.

Sheffield

Sheffield is a marvellous place to visit and has an abundance of attractions and activities to make your holiday truly memorable. If you are interested in music, Sheffield will not disappoint. The home of bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and the Human League, Sheffield is rich in great music venues and constantly has regional and national bands and artists performing all year round. The Leadmill and Plug are two of the cities top venues and in the summer Tramlines festival plays host to great music across various venues in Sheffield.

Sheffield is the greenest city in Europe and has over 2 million trees or 5,500 plant species. Must visits are The Winter Gardens, Sheffield Botanical Gardens and Peace Gardens. The Winter Gardens is a large greenhouse located in the centre of the city and is home to 2,500 plants from around the world!

Another place to visit when in Sheffield is Ecclesall Road; a long stretch of road that has a variety of quirky and traditional independent shops and boutiques. Many students from the two universities live on Ecclesall Road creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere.

The Peak District

The Peak District is one of the top places to visit in the UK and is a haven for walkers and adrenaline junkies. There’s rolling hills, forests and moorland to discover. The Peak District was Britain’s first National Park. Across the Peak District you can discover and area steeped in history and heritage such as Chatsworth House and Renishaw Hall and Gardens.

Barnsley

Barnsley is a historic town and is one of the top places in Yorkshire to learn about the county’s history and past. Castles to visit include the 18th Century Wentworth Castle to Elsecar Heritage Centre in the former colliery workshops.

In the centre of Barnsley you can find a whole host of museums and galleries such as The Cooper Gallery and The Civic, amongst great restaurants, pubs and bars and shops.

Penistone

Penistone is one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets. With stunning scenery and rural landscape, Penistone is a brilliant place to go for your next walking holiday. The Trans Pennine Trail is home to an abundance of wildlife including Shetland Ponies and there are many farms offering visitors and children the chance to see animals such as Cannon Hall Farm. Penistone is also great for cycling across and there are a range of cycling trails available that are suitable for all ages.

Penistone is also a lively market town and the Music Train is a must visit! The train serves real ale and is fantastic experience with guests playing their favourite instruments for the journey. If you’re visiting in the summer, head to the annual Penistone Show that is held on the second Saturday in September. It is one of the largest one day shows in Yorkshire with visitor numbers sometimes exceeding 10,000.

Bawtry

Bawtry is situated near the River Idle and is a great place to visit when in South Yorkshire. Bawtry has a rich heritage and in the 12th Century it was the third largest inland port in England and then up until the 19th Century it was a busy river port.

Today Bawrty is a small market town full of character and charm and is a great place to visit for a bit of retail therapy. Top attractions in Bawtry include the Aeroventure Aircraft Museum and the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery, that exhibits fine art, decorative art, history and archaeology.
