Brough Castle

Scroll

Situated in the village of Brough in Cumbria stands the impressive Brough Castle. The ancient Castle was built by William Rufus around 1092 within the old Roman fort of Verterae, in order to protect the route through the Pennine Mountains.

It was frequently targeted by the Scots and so the keep was situated at the top of the Castle and used as a refuge.  Brough Castle is surrounded by picturesque countryside and a stunning backdrop of rolling hills.  After exploring the Castle, visitors can stop off for a bite to eat at the tearoom or ice cream parlour situated opposite the ancient ruins.

Like so many other castles in the region, Brough Castle was restored in the 17th century by the Lady Anne Clifford, traces of whose additions can still be seen.
