The King’s Head Inn, Bledington, Gloucestershire

The King’s Head Inn sits atop a grassy mound that overlooks a small river. There are six charming bedrooms. Its bar, with harmoniously mismatched furnishings, has plenty of small corners to cosy up in with a glass of its popular merlot. The seasonal menu offers dishes such as grilled Cornish plaice in tarragon butter, charred lemon and smoked pancetta. It’s also famous for its salads and sharing boards for about £16.

Wykeham Arms, Winchester, Hampshire

Every wall in this quirky pub is embellished floor-to-ceiling with framed historic photographs, large tin goblets and a great collection of bric-a-brac. Priced at £28.50, the dry-aged fillet steak with chips and béarnaise hits the spot. Or enjoy one of its 29 malt whiskies.

Swan Inn, Swinbrook, Oxfordshire

Sleep at the Swan’s riverside cottage then head to the pub for a lazy Sunday afternoon and play a board game or relax in front of the television. This converted stone barn is the sister of the King’s Head Inn at Bledington and encompasses the same community-driven ethos. Try the confit duck leg with roasted sweet potatoes (£17.95).

Ebrington Arms, Ebrington, Gloucestershire

This pretty stone-built pub near Winston Churchill’s ancestral home, Blenheim Palace, attracts many walkers and visitors. Snuggle up in a corner at a candlelit table and enjoy one of their own-brewed Yubberton ales. Tuck into some bubble and squeak with Jerusalem artichoke and purple-sprouting broccoli (£15). This sophisticated inn won Gloucestershire dining pub of the year in The Good Pub Guide 2019.
