… these were just some of the things author Nick Corble encountered during his diagonal walk through England.

Almost exactly a year ago we featured Nick as he set out on his alternative coast to coast walk across England. Following a line drawn at 45 degrees through the very centre of England (hence the ‘diagonal’ part of Diagonal Walking), Nick took his first steps vowing to follow only footpaths and other public rights of way. As he did so, what he couldn’t have known was he was about to experience extremes of both weather and politics unseen for at least a generation.

Of course, being an author, Nick has written a book about his walk. Called Diagonal Walking: Slicing Through The Heart of England, the book has already been described as “A really enjoyable travel book in the grand tradition of Bill Bryson”, with others saying Nick is “a genial and humorous guide (with) many amusing stories”. Nick explains that Diagonal Walking was always meant to be more than ‘just another book about an old bloke on a long walk’. When he started planning the walk, he decided to involve as many people as possible, both personally and virtually, via various social media accounts, as well as podcasts and even a YouTube channel. ‘I wanted to involve people every step of the way in any way I could’, Nick explains, ‘not only with the walk, but in lifting the lid on the whole process of writing, editing and getting the book published.’ In this sense, Diagonal Walking is really a multi-dimensional project.
