Warwickshire, nestled in the heart of England, offers a variety of serene waterways waiting to be explored. Once a way of transporting goods throughout the country, these waterways are now popular locations for leisure activities, as well as being havens for wildlife.

What’s more, there are lots of fantastic pubs with accommodation nearby, ready for a relaxing sleep after a busy day experiencing the beauty that these canals and rivers provide.

Let’s dive into four wonderful ways to immerse yourself in Warwickshire’s waterways and the pubs with accommodation nearby.

Canal Cruising

Warwickshire's Waterways

One of the most famous canal waterways in the county is what’s known as The Warwickshire Ring. Spanning nearly 100 miles across four different canals, The Warwickshire Ring follows a circular route passing through historical towns and countryside’s. Hire a narrowboat to explore a section of the route or help other narrowboaters through one of the 94 different locks found along the way. Be sure to stop at one of the cosy pubs lining the canal for a refreshing meal and drink during your visit.

Towpath Treks

Warwickshire's Waterways

Take a leisurely stroll along the tranquil towpaths of Warwickshire’s canals, taking in the sights and sounds found on these magnificent waterways along the way. Check out the Canal & River Trust website to find walks that will guide you through points of interest along the canal routes. Explore interesting locations such as the 12th-century Norman Abbey and Abbey Green Park, offering panoramic views of Polesworth Abbey set against the backdrop of the River Anker, or Edstone Aqueduct, an impressive piece of 19th centaury engineering still in use today.

Paddle on the River Leam

For those looking for more of a thrill, find your balance with kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on the serene waters of the River Leam.  As you head upstream, you’ll paddle through Welches Meadow and Leam Valley nature reserves – a great place to spot some of the amazing animals that call these waterways home. Whether you are a beginner or experienced water sports enthusiast, everyone can enjoy the tranquillity of paddling down the river.

Cycling the Lias Line

Warwickshire's Waterways

Hop on your bike and embark on a scenic journey along the Lias Line, a 23.5-mile cycling route stretching from Rugby to Warwick. Follow the path along a dismantled railway to Warwickshire Wildlife Trust sites at Ashlawn Cutting and Cock Robin Wood, both havens for rare plants and butterflies. Pedal further along the canal, passing through wildflower meadows, quaint villages, and reservoirs.
