What better way to explore the picturesque cities, coastlines and countryside inhabiting the Tyne and Wear region than Cycling. Take in the idyllic scenery all around you in the Tyne and Wear through one of a host of cycle trails through the mythical ancient coastal ruins. Or go cycling from Newcastle to Sunderland taking in the two cities in Tyne and Wear. With historic sites all around you, such as the Tynemouth Castle and Priory you can get a real taste of the history and heritage that has shaped the Tyne and Wear. Out of the cities many of the cycle routes are very quiet and tranquil and the perfect area to stop for a picnic or just to enjoy the breathtaking views.

With many trails offering stunning scenic views, cycling across the Tyne and Wear and the surrounding towns is a great way to explore and keep active while you’re away. If you don’t want to bring your own bikes with you cycle hire is available at a range of shops across the Tyne and Wear. They provide a range of bikes to hire from kids bikes to trial and mountain bikes, also providing helmets, tools and maps to help rookie cyclists in the region. In addition many cycle shops offer coaching and training courses for the inexperienced riders who still want to enjoy cycling in the Tyne and Wear. If you prefer to get the adrenaline pumping and want to try mountain biking there a range of routes from the beginner to the experienced rider.

You can cycle the historic 19th century Waggonway network. The Network was once used to haul coal to ships on the River Tyne from dozens of coal mines in the borough but had fallen into disrepair over many years. There are a range of routes to explore the Waggonway network with one for every level of cyclist. With a host of other routes from the Hadrian’s Cycleway to the North Sea Cycle Route, you can explore so much of Tyne and Wear by cycling. There are group rides organised by Sustrans and Watbike for novices and experienced riders that take you around all the hidden areas of the Tyne and Wear that you wouldn’t find if you didn’t know the area.
