Tyne and Wear is situated in the very north east of England between Northumberland and Durham. Consisting of Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland, the county has its fair share of cultural quayside cities, as well as sandy North Sea beaches. Whether you are looking for a city break or to get out in the countryside, the Tyne and Wear area has a diverse range of things to do, places to visit and countryside to explore.

A day at the beach isn’t always the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Tyne and Wear. Nevertheless, Sandhaven Beach in South Shields is an award winning beach, consisting of thrilling water sports, adventure golf and bustling parades.

For those looking to get out and about in the countryside, Saltwell Park is an award-winning park in Gateshead which is very popular with locals. Gibside National Trust in rural Gateshead is also worth a visit. The 18th century landscaped garden offers miles of woodland and riverside walks with views across the Derwent Valley. Visitors can explore the Chapel and Orangery, as well as the Walled Garden. With lots of things to see and do at Gibson National Trust, it is a great day out for the whole family.
