There is an incredible amount of things to do in Leicestershire. Once an important Roman Settlement, Leicestershire is steeped in history and heritage. Step back in time with a visit to the Jewry Wall Museum or take a trip to Leicestershire’s oldest town, Castle Park where you can see the Great Hall of Leicester Castle and the medieval Guildhall.
For those interested in history, a must visit is to the Battle of Bosworth Heritage Centre where you can learn about the famous battle where King Richard III lost his life. There’s also plenty of re-enactments and events happening throughout the year at the Heritage Centre.
Places To Visit
If you’re looking for a family outing in the picturesque Leicestershire countryside, then head to Conkers in the National Forest. Stroll through the forest on a warm summer’s day, or take a picnic and simply watch the world go by.
Alternatively, visit the National Space Centre, which is the UK’s largest attraction dedicated to all things space and planets. The centre has six galleries, Rocket Tower and the UK’s largest domed planetarium. Wander through various rooms and sections of the centre and come face to face with astronauts and spacesuits.
Another great day out for the whole family is a trip to Twycross Zoo, which is home to one of the world’s largest primate collections.
Arts & Culture
Experience the arts and culture of Leicestershire with a trip to the theatre or art gallery. At De Montfort Hall, visitors can listen to live music and enjoy comedy and dance. Loughborough Town Hall also puts on many performances and events across the mediums of ballet, drama and musicals.
For those interested in film and art, a must-visit is to Phoenix, a digital media centre, which showcases interactive art installations, art workshops and indie films as well as blockbusters.
If you’re visiting Leicestershire in the summer, why not enjoy a night out at Kilworth House and the Conkers Amphitheatre, which puts on shows including the Proms.
Nature and Wildlife
One of the best ways to experience the county’s beautiful landscape is by walking. Head to the National Forest which is abundant in nature and wildlife and has many walking and cycling trails. Or you can explore the region on the Leicestershire Round which is a 100 mile circular walk around the county,
As well as the National Forest, Leicestershire is home to a range of country parks such as Bradgate Country Park where visitors can discover the ruins of the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey and the folly Old John . Those who are keen cyclists and horse riders are able to enjoy all of the above with many accessible bridleways and cycle paths across Leicestershire.
Football: Visitors to Leicester can visit Leicester City Football Club and take a tour around their stadium. Or why not get really involved in the atmosphere and watch a match!
Rugby: Leicester’s world famous Tigers rugby club are two-times Guinness Premiership winners in 2009 and 2010, and the first club to retain the European Heineken Cup. Visit their stadium on Welford Road and experience the excitement of match day.
