Estrella Damm Top Gastropubs

Set up in 2009, Estrella Damm Top Gastropubs was created for the purpose of recognising the hard work of those in the pub industry, but also to act as a go-to source for the best pubs to dine in the UK. 

Every year the Estrella Damm Top Gastropubs Awards are voted for by hospitality and food experts in the industry and rate pubs against a set list of criteria.  One hundred pubs made the final shortlist, with the top 50 being invited to the main event in London.  

The top 100 have just been released for 2024, and we are thrilled to see a few of our members mentioned within the list!  Of the list, we have cherry-picked some of our favourite gastropubs that feature on Stay in a Pub.  

The Bull & Last, Islington, London

It is no surprise that The Bull & Last secured a spot in the Top 50. The wonderful London gastropub is dedicated to creating exceptional food which is tailored to the season. Using local suppliers, the pub prides itself on using only the very best ingredients for its changing menus. From heartwarming pub classics to the freshest seafood, delightful sharing plates, and indulgent puddings that redefine sweet satisfaction. The pub also does a cracking Sunday Roast! 

The wine selection highlights European producers complemented by a selection from the new world. Meanwhile, the diverse array of beers takes center stage with a strong emphasis on British breweries, including the acclaimed Five Points Brewing Co, creators of the signature house pale ale “So Solid Brew.” Additionally, the bar boasts an array of artisan spirits, enticing cocktails, mixers, and a tempting range of non-alcoholic alternatives.

The Black Swan, Devizes, Wiltshire

Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs

The Black Swan is a 17th century coaching inn in the historic market town of Devizes in Wiltshire. Not only is the pub the perfect location for exploring local attractions such as Longleat, Bowood and Castle Coombe, it is renowned for its delicious food which is sourced from local suppliers.  

Head Chef Kevin Chandler has worked with some of the nation’s top chefs, including Rick Stein, and has brought his own passionate brand of cooking to The Black Swan. The kitchen’s food ethos is a simple one; to cook with passion, with attention to detail, depth of flavour and refined cooking techniques using the finest, local and seasonal ingredients. 

Striving to create “something unique,” he has fostered strong connections with suppliers to ensure the highest quality ingredients reach the plate. These partners encompass Walter Rose & Son, the trusted butcher, Lovejoys, a premium wholesaler, a local farm-based hub for fresh fruits and vegetables, and New Wave Seafood, ensuring daily doorstep deliveries.

The Methuen Arms, Corsham, Wiltshire

Situated in the heart of the historic market town of Corsham, The Methuen Arms is a stunning Georgian coaching inn. The Butcombe owned pub is dedicated to showcasing top-quality ingredients sourced from local suppliers and their own kitchen garden. Embracing seasonality, The Methuen Arms’ menu puts a creative spin on traditional pub classics.

Beer takes a prominent role in their offerings, with daily specials like the Butcombe Gold beer-battered fish and chips. The menus cater to diverse preferences, featuring vegetarian and vegan options, including a delectable vegan-friendly Sunday roast.
