Home to picturesque villages, stunning coastline and beautiful open fields and countryside, walking in Essex is a popular activity when planning your holidays.

If you’re looking to discover Essex on a gentle stroll then there are plenty of short, circular walks that are under 20 miles long. For those who are experienced walkers or want a bit of challenge, why not try The Essex Way a 82 mile long distance walk from Epping to Harwich, or The Saffron Trail a 71 mile trail starting in Southend and ending in Saffron Walden.

With so much to see from the Blackwater Estuary to Constable Country on the Essex/Suffolk border why not stay in a pub when on your walking holiday? Pubs are a great base for those on walking holidays as they cater for all with everything under one roof including comfortable rooms with all the mod cons such as en-suite bathrooms, Freeview and flat screen TVs, delicious homemade meals and entertainment such as live music, quiz nights and beer festivals. After a fantastic but tiring day out exploring Essex, guests can relax in the warm and cosy pub with a pint of on the region’s finest ales or glass of fine wine before retiring to their room that is just a stone’s throw away.

Some of the top walks in Essex include:

Of course Essex is renowned for being home to Constable Country, and has been immortalised in Constable’s paintings. Today visitors can discover the stunning landscapes of the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale through a selection of walks including a National Trust guided tour around Flatford or the Stour Valley Path – a 60 mile walk that follows the River Stour from Newmarket in Suffolk to Cattawade and passes through Bures, Manningtree and Leavenheath.
