1. Ashurst to Lyndhurst Loop 

Embark on a predominantly on-road cycling adventure that unveils some of the of the best open views the New Forest has to offer. This scenic route promises a picturesque journey through the heart of nature’s beauty. 

The starting point for this delightful ride is the Ashurst New Forest station, where your cycling journey commences by heading south through the charming campsite. Traverse light forests and meadows on well-defined paths, soaking in the serene surroundings. En route, you’ll encounter the Beaulieu River, adding a touch of uniqueness to the ride. 

Start: Ashurst Railway Station 

Distance: 14 miles (22.5 km) 

Duration: 2-3 hours 

Accessibility: Well-maintained minor roads and clearly marked off-road cycle tracks. 

2. Beaulieu to Brockenhurst Loop 

Begin your ride in the historic Beaulieu Village, nestled at the head of the Beaulieu River. This captivating ride unfolds through majestic heathland, treating you to panoramic views overlooking a WWII airfield. As you pedal through the open expanses, history and nature intertwine to create a truly immersive experience. 

On the return leg of the journey, the route meanders through enchanting woodlands, offering a delightful contrast to the earlier heathland vistas.

Distance: 16.3 miles (26.2 km)

Accessibility: Well-marked by-ways, off–road cycle tracks, and smoothly surfaced roads. 

3. Hawkhill Trail 

Commence your journey from Roundhill Campsite, a site with a rich wartime history. During WWII, it served as ancillary accommodation for RAF personnel stationed at Beaulieu Airfield. 

The cycle paths on this route offer a predominantly flat terrain, making it suitable for riders of all abilities. Traverse the picturesque landscape, featuring open heaths and enchanting wooded areas, as you pedal through this visually stunning and cyclist-friendly terrain. 

Delight in the freedom of a bike ride devoid of traffic, and as you navigate the route, discover remnants of Beaulieu Airfield that bear visible traces of its significant WWII past. 

Start: Roundhill Campsite 

Distance: 9.1 miles (14.5 km) 

Duration: 2-3 hours 

Accessibility: Off-road gravel cycle tracks and airfield pathways. 

4. Northern Forest Circular 

Embark on a cycling journey through the northern reaches of the New Forest and be treated to picturesque views of rolling hills, heathland, and woodlands. 

This scenic cycle ride boasts beautiful views at every turn. Whether you find yourself atop ridges or descending into valleys, the northern New Forest showcases some of the most expansive and impressive landscapes within the National Park. 

As you cycle this route, you’ll encounter the historic Grand Slam bomb test site. Witness the echoes of wartime history as the largest bomb ever dropped by the British on their own soil was tested ‘live’ at Ashley Walk Bombing Range on March 13, 1945. Although the crater is now concealed by vegetation, other bomb craters in the area serve as visible reminders of this significant event. 

Start: Appleslade Bottom car park 

Distance: 17.8 miles (28.6 km) 

Duration: 3-4 hours 

Accessibility: Off-road dedicated cycle tracks and well surfaced minor roads. 

5. The Old Railway 

Also known as the ‘Castleman’s Corkscrew’ this scenic cycle route takes you from Brockenhurst to Burley, following the Old Railway line.  

The Old Railway line connecting Brockenhurst to Burley was established in the late 19th century as part of the Southampton and Dorchester Railway. The Railway opened its tracks in 1888, primarily facilitating the transport of goods and livestock. However, by the 1960s, the railway fell into disuse and was eventually closed. 

In the 1980s, a transformative effort converted the disused railway corridor into a picturesque cycle path within the National Cycle Network. Tracing the former tracks, this path now offers a scenic and nearly traffic-free route between Brockenhurst and Burley. 

Start: Brockenhurst Railway Station 

Distance: 9 miles (14.5 km) 

Duration: 2-3 hours 

Accessibility: Well-marked off-road cycle tracks and a few well surfaced roads. 

6. Looping Lepe and Exbury 

Embark on a cycling adventure that treats you to splendid sea views along the enchanting coastline of the New Forest. 

This leisurely ride is perfect for dry summer days, offering a smooth journey. However, in the winter months, be prepared for muddy and challenging conditions on the by-ways.  

As the New Forest gracefully meets the sea, Lepe Country Park unfolds with panoramic views across the Solent, creating a picturesque backdrop enriched by a diverse array of wildlife. 

The route also leads you to the spectacular Exbury Gardens, a sprawling 200-acre site renowned for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and rare trees and shrubs. This sprawling garden transforms into a riot of colour in spring, offering a tranquil oasis. In Autumn the garden creates a splendid display as the leaves change colour.

Distance: 9.3 miles (15 km) 

Duration: 2-3 hours 

Accessibility: Predominantly minor roads with some by-ways that can be muddy in damp conditions.
