The Star Inn is the sort of country pub that makes you want to put down your walking boots and stay awhile. Sitting in the tiny sandstone village of Harbottle in Coquetdale, this historic coaching inn was built using stone from the ruins of nearby Harbottle Castle. Today, it remains very much at the heart of village life. Family-owned and thoughtfully refurbished, the Star brings together a traditional pub, restaurant, and wood-fired pizzeria with three en-suite B&B rooms, a self-catering cottage, village shop and National Park Information Point. For walkers, cyclists and lovers of wide-open spaces, the location is difficult to resist. The Cheviot Hills rise nearby, the legendary Drake Stone can be reached on foot, and the pub sits within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, home to some of England’s darkest night skies.

After a day exploring the Cheviots, cycling through Coquetdale or simply enjoying the peace of Northumberland National Park, the Star Inn’s three en-suite B&B rooms offer a comfortable place to rest for the night. Named after local rivers, the rooms sit together in an annexe behind the pub, giving guests a little extra peace and privacy while keeping supper and a well-earned pint reassuringly close. Each double/twin room is practical for couples, friends and walking companions. A particularly appealing feature is that each room has its own enclosed patio garden with outdoor furniture. Dogs are welcome on request, with prior acknowledgement.
For longer stays (minimum three nights), Star Cottage is next door and sleeps up to four guests across two bedrooms.
Food & Drink
There is plenty to look forward to after a day on the hills. The Star Inn serves a mix of traditional classics and Mediterranean-inspired food, with its wood-fired pizzeria adding something a little different to the usual country-pub menu. At the bar there is a good choice of beers, local real ales and wines, alongside soft and hot drinks. The pub regularly celebrates local brewing too, including beer festivals featuring ales from North East breweries.
