There is plenty of history behind the doors of The General Tarleton, but this 18th-century coaching inn is firmly looking forward. Set in the North Yorkshire countryside at Ferrensby, the pub reopened in August 2025 after a thoughtful restoration. Food is a very good reason to arrive hungry. The kitchen celebrates seasonal British cooking and Yorkshire produce, giving familiar pub favourites the kind of attention to detail you would expect from a team with serious culinary credentials. Add a lively bar, local beers, an extensive wine list and a hidden terrace for sunnier days, and it is an easy place to settle in for the evening rather than simply stop for supper. Upstairs, eight restful bedrooms make staying over part of the experience. With Knaresborough, Harrogate, Ripley, Fountains Abbey and some of North Yorkshire’s loveliest walking country nearby, this fantastic pub works equally well for a food-led weekend, romantic escape, or a few leisurely days exploring Yorkshire.

The General Tarleton has eight bedrooms. Each has been designed with comfort and tranquillity in mind, combining earthy colours and natural textures with subtle nods to the surrounding Yorkshire countryside. Super king-size beds provide plenty of room to stretch out, while cosy reading spaces give you somewhere to settle with a book before turning in. Practical details have been given plenty of thought too. Every room comes with a smart TV, coffee machine, complimentary tea-making facilities and fully stocked minibar. En-suite bathrooms feature underfloor heating, large walk-in showers and Bath House toiletries, with Cloud Nine hairdryers adding another useful touch. Bedrooms are primarily designed for two adults, although one cot or Z-bed can be added with prior acknowledgement, subject to availability in select rooms.
Food & Drink
Come for the Yorkshire countryside, but make sure you leave plenty of time for supper. Food is a big part of the experience at The General Tarleton, and with Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks behind the pub, there is plenty to tempt you. The approach is reassuringly familiar without being predictable: proper pub classics sit alongside more refined seasonal plates, Sundays are made for a traditional roast, while the set two-course menu is an appealing option. The bar is worth making time for in its own right. Local and Yorkshire beers sit alongside an extensive wine list, spirits and cocktails, with bar snacks available for something lighter. On warmer days, head for the hidden terrace, while winter lends itself rather nicely to a drink by the fire. Advance restaurant reservations are recommended.
