A hidden garden and historic York on the doorstep

Step outside The Exhibition and historic York is quite literally on your doorstep. Sitting opposite Bootham Bar and just a few minutes’ walk from the magnificent York Minster, this popular pub makes a wonderfully convenient base for discovering one of England’s most captivating cities. The building dates to 1702 and was once a grand Queen Anne-style home, with former residents including members of York’s famous Rowntree family. Today, original character and a wonderfully individual collection of pictures, memorabilia and curiosities give the pub an atmosphere all its own. Upstairs are six en-suite bedrooms, combining the proportions and architectural details of an 18th-century building with the everyday comforts needed for a city break.

Food & Drink

The Exhibition keeps things pleasingly uncomplicated when it comes to eating and drinking. The pub has an informal atmosphere that works equally well for a relaxed meal after a day exploring York or just a pint or two before bed. Expect burgers, pizza, and sharing plates. Where you eat can be half the fun. There are tables inside the characterful pub and in the light-filled conservatory, but when York gets a spell of sunshine it is difficult to resist heading outside. The Exhibition lays claim to the largest beer garden in York, a surprisingly secluded space filled with flowers and foliage behind its busy Bootham frontage. At the bar, expect a wide choice of cask ales, beers, wines and spirits.
