1066 Country Walk

Scroll

Step back in time with the 1066 Country Walk. Follow in the steps of William the Conqueror and admire historical sites on a gentle walk through ancient towns and villages, such as Winchelsea and Rye, over hillsides and through woodland, and passing oast houses and windmills. The route passes the Normans’ landing point at Pevensey and the battle site, and the castles at Pevensey and Herstmonceux.

What you will see on the way:

Battle Abbey and the scene of the Battle of Hastings
Carr Taylor Vineyard where you can enjoy free wine tasting
The hilltop town of Winchelsea, with its old church
The old town of Rye with its picturesque cobbled streets
