Changing the Perception of Pub Accommodation

In the past, whenever I was planning a short break or work trip in the UK, my first thought would be to research hotels to stay in. This was largely down to the fact that the idea of staying in a pub had never really occurred to me. But it seems my perception of pub rooms or bed and breakfast accommodation was rather out of date.

It wasn’t until I started working at Stay in a Pub that my eyes were well and truly opened. I was taken aback by the huge variety of pub accommodation; from chic city pubs with boutique-style bedrooms to characterful country inns nestled in quaint English villages.

I was completely oblivious to how amazingly quirky and luxurious their rooms could be. With four-poster beds and lavish roll-top baths, there was a whole world of accommodation out there, which I never knew existed. Up until this point I had always searched for comfortable and stylish hotels, yet nothing had been so memorable as to make me book a return visit.

Aside from the bedrooms, the things I enjoy the most about staying in pubs are experiencing the warmest of welcomes from the landlord or landlady, enjoying the cosy bar and lounge areas and getting that home away from home feeling – something that I have never really experienced when I have stayed in a hotel.

I have put together a list of some of the top reasons why I now choose to stay in a pub over a hotel when travelling in the UK.

  1. Warm and welcoming

The feeling of walking into a pub and seeing a roaring log fire, comfy, deep-set sofas and the smell of delicious food being served is what makes British pubs so inviting. I love nothing more than to sit by the fire with friends, glass of red in hand and watching the world go by.

The friendliness of the staff and locals makes the experience of staying in a pub personal and authentic.

  1. Cosy and homely

Many pub bedrooms have homely touches and comfortable furnishings, which makes them all the more relaxing when staying away from home. For those travelling for work, pubs with accommodation can offer a peaceful and hospitable environment after a busy day on the road or in the office.

It is quite common for boutique pub bedrooms to have decadent roll-top baths which adds to the overall luxury of staying in pub accommodation.

  1. Distinctive and authentic

Complete with cosy décor and snug interiors, country inns and city pubs with rooms have their own unique style. The beauty of pubs with accommodation is that they are so varied, so you can usually find something to suit any taste or budget.

Whether you are looking for something chic and ‘Instagram-worthy’ or one that is more relaxed and low-key, each pub comes with its own distinctive charm.

  1. Convenient

Undoubtedly, one of the best things about staying in a pub is that you can eat, drink and sleep all under one roof! The convenience of knowing that your bed for the night is just a few steps away, makes the stay all the more relaxing…and possibly more indulgent!

What’s more, pubs are normally conveniently located as a base from which to explore the local area – or reach the road to your final destination.

Country inns are often surrounded by picturesque countryside and stunning landscapes, which makes them the perfect place to stay if you are looking to explore nearby walking or cycling routes, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or National Parks.

  1. Delicious seasonal and locally sourced food and drink

Many pubs pride themselves on their locally sourced food and drink. From delicious pub-grub classics to gastro-inspired menus, British pubs and inns are recognised for serving wholesome meals and seasonal food all year round.

Many of the pubs listed on Stay in a Pub have impressive awards and excellent write ups for their food and drink including in the Michelin Guide, Great Taste Awards, AA Rosettes, The Good Food Guide and Estrella’s Top 50 Gastropubs.
