The Castle sits in the historic Dartmoor village of Lydford and is everything you hope a country inn might be. The pub celebrates seasonal West Country produce, local ales feature prominently at the bar, and in the summertime drinking and dining spills into the garden. There are 13 beautifully styled bedrooms, with nine tucked above the pub and another four in a cottage just across the road. Some rooms have memorable touches including reclaimed-wood four-poster beds, freestanding baths and original stonework. The setting is just as special, with Lydford Castle next door and the spectacular Lydford Gorge close by. For walkers and cyclists, the location is difficult to improve upon. The Dartmoor Way, West Devon Way and National Cycle Network Route 27 pass through the village, while moorland, reservoirs, tors and wooded valleys wait beyond. Okehampton and Tavistock are both around ten minutes away by car, yet the inn itself feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.

The Castle Inn’s 13 beautifully styled en-suite bedrooms are spread between the historic pub and a cottage just across the road. Some look towards Dartmoor, others across the garden, and each provides a calm, comfortable retreat after a day walking the gorge or exploring the moor. Families have useful flexibility too. Z-beds can be added to selected larger rooms (additional charges apply), while guests are welcome to bring their own cot with prior acknowledgement where space allows. Food & Drink
After a day walking through Lydford Gorge or out on Dartmoor, The Castle Inn is exactly the sort of pub you will be pleased to return to. The kitchen is passionate about West Country produce, using ingredients from the surrounding landscapes to create a menu built around comforting classics and refined seasonal dishes. Pizzas feature alongside the main menu and Sundays are all about the traditional roast. The bar keeps things equally local. Expect a selection of local ales, lagers and an eclectic wine list. Where you eat and drink depends on the season. Winter invites you into the pub’s snug corners beside the real fires, while warmer days can be spent in the garden, where tables overlook neighbouring Lydford Castle. There is also a heated and illuminated stretch tent available for lunch and supper.
