Idyllic Cotswolds retreat with a bohemian spirit

Artist Residence Oxfordshire is hidden away in the peaceful village of South Leigh. Original beams, old stone, open fires and wonky historic details meet contemporary artwork, vintage furniture and playful design, giving this former 16th century farmhouse all the character of a proper country inn with a distinctly creative twist. There are 15 individually designed bedrooms, ranging from rooms tucked above the pub to converted barns, suites with private terraces, a family-friendly Hideaway and a quirky Shepherd’s Hut at the bottom of the garden. Downstairs, Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms is the heart of the stay: a warm, relaxed pub with sofas, cosy armchairs, a log burner and large inglenook fireplace, serving seasonal food alongside local ales, thoughtfully chosen wines and cocktails. The setting strikes a particularly good balance between countryside escape and sightseeing. Walks and quiet lanes begin outside the door, Oxford is around a 20-minute drive away and the wider Cotswolds are close by, with Blenheim Palace also easily reached.

Telegraph Travel wrote: “A unique country pub with a bohemian twist and arty vibe. This venture from Artist Residence offers gorgeous quirky rooms, scrumptious meals and contemporary art. The quintessentially English building is the platform for an eclectic, eccentric and imaginative renovation, with a warm welcome thrown in.”

Bedrooms

The 15 bedrooms at Artist Residence Oxfordshire are scattered across the old farmhouse and several converted outbuildings, which is a large part of their appeal. Rather than following one uniform design, every room has its own personality, bringing together original beams and historic details with contemporary art, reclaimed furniture, colourful textiles and thoughtful modern comforts. Across the room collection, guests can expect crisp bed linen, fluffy towels, luxury toiletries, a pod coffee machine with fresh milk, tea-making facilities, a thoughtfully stocked minibar, Smart TV, Roberts radio, telephone and complimentary WiFi. Dogs are welcome on request with prior acknowledgement as are extra beds for children in select rooms – additional charges apply.

Food & Drink

Food and drink revolve around Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms, where the mood is reassuringly that of a proper village pub. Think comfortable sofas, cosy armchairs, worn wood, a glowing log burner and a large inglenook fireplace, with locals, walkers and overnight guests all sharing the same relaxed space. The pub keeps things similarly unfussy, focusing on comforting classics, seasonal dishes and generous Sunday roasts. Breakfast is served every day and includes freshly cooked options. Local ales, carefully chosen wines and cocktails sit at the centre of the drinks list, making the pub equally suited to a pint after a muddy walk, a bottle of wine over supper or a late drink by the fire. In summer, the terrace and garden add a more sociable outdoor dimension, while colder months are all about claiming an armchair beside the fire.
