Bohemian seaside style in the heart of Penzance

Artist Residence Cornwall is a revitalised Georgian inn with plenty of personality on historic Chapel Street in the heart of Penzance. Inside, contemporary art rubs shoulders with vintage and reclaimed furniture, exposed beams, original features and the occasional statement roll-top bath. Bedrooms range from cosy doubles to spacious suites, family accommodation and a cottage, while downstairs The Cornish Barn brings together a relaxed restaurant, bar and lounge. Out back, a terrace garden and seasonal Shack bar come into their own during warmer months. Penzance makes an excellent base for exploring West Cornwall, with St Michael’s Mount, Mousehole, Newlyn, Porthcurno and some of Cornwall’s most dramatic coastline all within easy reach.

Bedrooms

Artist Residence Cornwall has 22 individually styled bedrooms and suites, plus a separate three-bedroom cottage, and the variety is a large part of its appeal. This is not somewhere that tries to make every bedroom look alike. Instead, expect a playful mixture of original artwork, vintage and reclaimed pieces, bold colours and Cornish character, with everything from compact hideaways to rooms with freestanding baths and generous suites overlooking the rooftops towards the coast. Practical comforts run throughout the collection. Rooms include WiFi, TVs, complimentary toiletries, Roberts radios, pod coffee machines with Grind coffee, fresh milk, tea-making facilities, hairdryers and minibars stocked with local and artisan snacks and drinks. Dogs are welcome on request, with prior acknowledgement in select rooms – additional charges apply.

Food & Drink

The Cornish Barn is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant, bar and lounge that gives Artist Residence Cornwall much of its sociable atmosphere. The kitchen focuses on hearty, wholesome dishes prepared with seasonal, locally sourced produce, keeping the food rooted in Cornwall without becoming overly formal. Breakfast is served every morning, with freshly cooked dishes and good coffee setting guests up for a day on the coast. The bar has a distinctly Cornish flavour, with local beers and ciders alongside thoughtfully chosen wines and easygoing cocktails. It is equally suited to a beer after a coastal walk, wine with supper or a cocktail before heading out into Penzance. Warmer weather brings the garden into its own. From spring through to the end of summer, the Shack bar opens at weekends with a casual street-food-style menu, cocktails and frozen margaritas.
