The Kings Arms in Temple Sowerby has a four hundred year history as a coaching inn, providing hospitality both to travellers on the old turnpike road and to early tourists. William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge chose the Kings Arms as a starting point for their exploration of the Lake District in 1799. In those days Temple Sowerby was known as “The Queen of Westmorland Villages”.
They have quickly established itself as one of the best places in the area to find fresh, quality food in a relaxed and unpretentious setting. Ingredients are locally sourced wherever practical, and everything is prepared and cooked on the premises. Guests can dine in the beautiful oak panelled restaurant, or for a more informal dining experience, opt for the cosy bar. They cater for a very wide range of tastes and budgets at the Kings Arms, from quick and simple snacks to delicious classics.
The Kings Arms offers bed and breakfast or half board accommodation in comfortable, en-suite rooms. There is a bright and airy residents lounge reserved for guests staying in the Kings Arms, where you can read in front of the fire, play a board game or just put your feet up. The Kings Arms is also a dog friendly hotel, and they go to extra effort to ensure they maintain a high standard of housekeeping when dogs have visited.
Situated right on the northern edge of Lake District National Park, and within easy reach of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Kings Arms is the perfect base for exploring England’s spectacular north country.
