The Best Pub Stays under £100

The Times recently released an article that showcased the 50 best UK hotels for under £100 a night, handpicked because their low-season rates fly in at under £100, with no one-time-only offers in sight. Not only this, but the hotels chosen include impeccable service, top-quality bedrooms and enviable locations.

Of the 50 shortlisted, five of these are actually pubs listed with Stay in a Pub! Pub accommodation has long rivalled the standards of high-quality hotels, so it’s brilliant to see the industry receive even more national recognition.

As such, we’re delighted to showcase five of the best pub stays under £100, as chosen by The Times.

The Market House, Reading

Market House, Reading, Bedroom and Sofa

The Times says: “This former Lloyds Bank branch has occupied pride of place in the town’s historic Market Place since 1765. Now reinvented as a neighbourhood hangout and hotel, it’s still impressively on the money. It is top-loaded with boutique prerequisites, including a rooftop terrace, a sourdough-pizza restaurant, a cocktail bar with a festival vibe and 24 industrial-chic crash pads. Think primary colours, exposed brickwork, distressed wood, abstract art and vintage tiling for the bathrooms.

The Swan, Wedmore

The Times says: “There’s a winning neighbourhood vibe about this laid-back Georgian gastropub in the affluent and arty village of Wedmore. The cavernous lounge has crisscrosses of squidgy leather armchairs, an open fire and fantastic rustic grub by Tom Blake, previously at River Cottage. Bedrooms are boutique beauties, with sleek white-painted tongue-and-groove panelling punctuated with vibrant bursts of colour and textural prints for a fresh, informal finish. Usually you must forgo a bath to bag an entry-level bargain, but even the most affordable rooms here have deep tubs and also full-size handmade toiletries. A soak is much appreciated after a cycle in the nearby Somerset Levels or yomp over the Mendip Hills.

The George, Cheltenham

The Times says: “The Superdry supremo Julian Dunkerton was behind the lustworthy conversion of this row of five grade II listed Regency townhouses, although the property is now owned by Young & Co’s Brewery. Admittedly, the rooms that are under £100 a night are as snug as a pair of skinny jeans, but they sport the same DNA as the more expensive ones — sultry inky blue, putty-grey walls, designer furniture and comfy beds. If your drainpipe denim is a tight squeeze, guests also get access to Cheltenham Ladies’ College fitness centre, a short walk away.

The Globe, Topsham

The Times says: “This cosy whitewashed inn has been welcoming visitors since the 16th century. The waterfront views haven’t changed, but those olden-day travellers certainly wouldn’t recognise the rooms. The muted paintwork, trendy floral wallpapers, handmade Vispring beds and flatscreen TVs are fabulously 21st century. In the curio-filled dining rooms pub classics have been updated too. Anyone for vegan fish and chips? The cod is replaced by banana blossom (the texture is similar . . . ish) in seaweed batter. Topsham has a ringside seat on the Exe estuary, ideal for a postprandial stroll.

The High Field Townhouse, Birmingham

High Field, Birmingham, Pub Guest Bedroom

The Times says: “The city hosts the Commonwealth Games this summer, but this listed Victorian villa is a winner year-round, especially with foodies. It is on the top table of Edgbaston’s foodie quarter, with the High Field, its sister gastropub next door, renowned for its modern British menu, and Simpsons, the city’s Michelin-starred gastronomic grande dame, also nearby. The townhouse’s dozen bedrooms are tasty too, with flamboyant wallpapers, colourful headboards, handpicked antiques and smart tiled bathrooms. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Bullring & Grand Central shopping centre offer predinner workouts.
