Stay in a Pub Visits The Pontcanna

Last weekend Stay in a Pub made the journey from Essex to Cardiff to try out the fantastic bedrooms at The Pontcanna Inn. The Pontcanna Inn is part of The City Pub Company who have a growing portfolio of forty-two great pubs across the southern half of England and Wales. The City Pub Company reopened The Pontcanna this summer after an extensive refurbishment.

The Pontcanna Inn is perfectly situated close to Bute Park, which made for a great evening walk before dinner, and just a little further you will find Cardiff Castle, the city centre and the SSE SWALEC, Principality and Cardiff City Stadiums. After a quick and easy check-in, we headed upstairs to check out our bedroom and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The room had a quirky decor with distinctive wall art, hanging lights and colourful furnishings. The bed was super comfy with a thick duvet ideal for a chilly Autumn night. The en-suite bathroom was fitted with a huge rainforest shower, complimentary toiletries and the room had all the little luxuries you would expect including crisp fresh towels, a flat-screen TV, free WiFi, a coffee maker and kettle. After settling into our room we headed downstairs to the pub for some food and drinks (a certain plus to staying in a pub).

The Pontcanna has a good size bar and dining area plus heated courtyards at the front and back of the building, the majority of the back area is covered in winter so the rain will never interrupt your evening. Along with a varied selection of food and drink the pub was serving ‘Posh Kebabs’ from a food truck in the garden which we couldn’t resist trying and they were delicious, even if the picture doesn’t do it justice! After a few more drinks we took the short walk upstairs to our bedroom. Something people often worry about when staying in a pub is the noise but there was no trouble with this on our stay and after a great nights sleep we packed up our belongings and headed downstairs to breakfast.

We were greeted with a wide selection of hot drinks, juices, fresh fruit, cereals and pastries alongside a selection of cooked to order hot breakfasts including a full English and vegetarian options, American pancakes and Shakshouka to name a few. After a quick and easy check out took the short walk back into Cardiff to spend the day exploring before heading home in the evening. The Pontcanna showcased everything that is great about a pub stay from the friendly and welcoming staff to the lively pub atmosphere, delicious food and drink and last but not least the stylish bedrooms. Thank you to the staff at the pub for making our visit so lovely and we highly recommend you to pay them a visit next time you’re planning a trip to Cardiff.
