Away from the bustling city streets of London lies the tranquil countryside of Hertfordshire and in recent years cycling has become a popular leisure activity in Hertfordshire. Cycling round Hertfordshire is a great way to explore the real Hertfordshire at your own pace and many cycle routes have been designed to pass famous locations without being too strenuous.

With many cycle routes offering stunning views of Hertfordshire’s beautiful countryside, cycling can be a great way to explore and keep active while you’re away on holiday. Cycle hire is available at a range of shops across Hertfordshire, providing a range of bikes to hire from kids bikes to trial and mountain bikes, also providing helmets, tools and maps to help rookie cyclists in the region. In addition many cycle shops offer coaching, training courses and guided tours for the inexperienced cyclists who still want to enjoy riding in Hertfordshire.

There are a range of great cycle routes, here are some ones that we recommend trying in Hertfordshire:

Ebury Way is an easy short cycle route ideal for families. It runs along NCN route 61 and a dismantled railway line from Rickmansworth to Watford and passes through a variety of habitats, including open moor, woodland, and wetlands. The trail crosses a number of waterways including the Rivers Colne, Chess and Gade and the Grand Union Canal.

Secondly, the Barnet to Welwyn Garden City route goes through Monken Hadley Common and Hatfield House and Gardens an ideal place to stop for refreshments.

Lastly the Lee Valley trail follows the River Lee along the towing path up to Ware and then St Margarets, finishing by the train station.

We recommend using Sustrans national cycle network app, which is free on Apple and Android and enables the user access to over 25,000 miles of walking and cycling across the UK.
