Bedfordshire History and Heritage

Bedfordshire is host to many fabulous cultural events – such as the carnival and mela in Luton, the Riverside Festival in Bedford and annual Canal Festival in Linslade. Step back in time on a visit to the Aeronautical and Automotive Museum, home to the Shuttleworth Collection at the Old Warden Aerodrome. It is one of the most prestigious collections of its type in the world.

Birthplace of the Church of England in Dunstable and John Bunyan author of ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’, Bedfordshire is steeped in history. The county has played host to many of the great Kings and Queens of England holding court and hunting in the great forests. Queen Eleanor was laid to rest in Dunstable, Catherine of Aragon was incarcerated at Ampthill and during the Second World War many crowned heads of Europe took refuge in Bedfordshire.

For animal lovers Bedfordshire will feel like home, with two major animal attractions to visit. Woburn Safari takes you on a wild ride through the Northern Plains, Savannah Grasslands and Kingdom of the Carnivores where you can see lions, tigers and zebras up close. If one day visiting animals isn’t enough, then Whipsnade Zoo provides the solution. With a huge range of animals and activities, you’re guaranteed a great day out at Whipsnade.

Stockwood Discovery Centre is a fascinating day out. Bringing to life fascinating stories, from prehistoric times to the evolution of Stockwood House and the Farley Estate as it is today.

If you’re looking to stay active, there are many established paths to walk and cycle through in Bedfordshire. Why not try kayaking on the Great River Ouse? Places to Eat and Drink in Bedfordshire

There is no shortage of great places to eat and drink in Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire’s eponymous dish is the Bedfordshire Clanger. A light pastry with both savoury and sweet filings, still served today at Gunn’s Bakeries in Biggleswade, Sandy and Bedford.
