Welcome to The Swan, the bustling village pub with 7 en-suite bedrooms and an outstanding kitchen led by Tom Blake from River Cottage.
They're open all day for a quick drink, a snack or a delicious meal. Come and sit in thye bar beside a woodburner, watch the world go by at tables out front, dine in the restaurant or alfresco on the terrace - or just enjoy the peace of the garden.
They have completely refurbished The Swan, sympathetically modernising the building and restoring much of the original eighteenth & nineteenth century architecture. Opening as a Beer House in the early 1700s, the property was subsequently enlarged to become 'The Swan Hotel' from the mid 1800s with rooms, stables and coaching yard. After many years in the hands of indifferent pub companies, The Swan is now firmly back in business!
The pub is in the centre of Wedmore, a delightful Somerset village settled since the Iron Age and famous for King Alfred's Treaty of Wedmore in 878 AD. The village is busy and attractive, with a range of shops that belie its size and elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture, as well as many older buildings.
Richard and his team run a bustling village bar serving drinks and snacks from early in the morning until late at night. They have fires, stripped wood floors, comfy seats and bar stools. They serve everything from outstanding local ales and ciders to a stiff Bloody Mary for a lazy Sunday morning. Come and read the paper (they'll supply one if you don't bring it) and take your ease. As with the food, they aim to reflect the seasons with the drinks, and as summer approaches we will be serving Pimms, fruity ciders and homemade lemonade.
There is plenty of room in The Swan and they want everyone to stretch out and relax. In addition to the bar there is also a lovely sun filled lounge area with extra comfy chairs and its own woodburner. A perfect place for a quick cup of coffee or a small salad at lunchtime.
The kitchen is the heart of the pub. Tom Blake and his team produce a River Cottage inspired menu which changes daily and uses all the best local ingredients. It is simple, unfussy, fresh food at its best. This starts with fresh bread and cakes produced daily and also extends to their own cured hams and bacon, fresh fish delivered 6 days a week from Brixham and fresh meat such as pork provided by a local butcher's own herd.
The Swan has seven individually designed and supremely comfortable en-suite guest bedrooms. There are six bedrooms on the first floor comprising 3 Big rooms, 2 Medium rooms and 1 Small room. The upstairs 7th bedroom is a spacious, light filled Loft room. All rooms have flat screen TVs (with DVD), iPod docking stations, free Wi-Fi access and freshly ground coffee and tea-making facilities.
Two medium bedrooms located at the rear of the pub. Sleek white-painted tongue and groove panelling and airy 60's vibe punctuated with vibrant bursts of colour and textural prints to create a fresh and informal mood. In each en-suite bathrooms simplicity is the key with large wall-mounted basins and deep built-in baths offering a sense of space and minimalism. Both rooms can also be used as a twin.
Up in the loft, the large 7th bedroom is decorated in dusky pinks, blues and greys with a king size bed and a claw foot bath in the room. A collection of French antique milk glass pendant lights hangs from the ceiling and a free-standing marble topped dresser with a bowl sink sits in the bedroom. There is a separate wet room with power shower.
The 3 Big rooms have been decorated in a calm and restful palette of soft neutrals and stony grey tones punctuated with pretty textiles and traditional florals. It's a relaxing but elegant look with six foot divan beds dominating each room and crisp white Egyptian linen and French vintage furniture combining to create a peaceful, informal setting. Two of the large rooms feature cast iron claw-footed baths in the bedrooms and all three large rooms have power showers in their en-suite bathrooms.
