    Castle Suite

    Sleeps 2
  • From £135 per room per night

From £135.00 per couple per night, this suite can be set up with Super King or Twin beds. Relax in a hot bath or take a refreshing rainfall shower in the luxurious en-suite bathroom. There is a sitting area in the bedroom and a separate dressing area. There are fantastic views of Brough Castle and the fells beyond from the suite.

The Keep dates from about 1200 and the Castle was frequently besieged by Scots raiders. It was the home of the Clifford family and burnt down after a Christmas party in 1521! It was restored by Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century when many "modern" additions were made. After another fire in 1666 (a bad year for fires!) it was abandoned and by 1800 it had fallen into disrepair. It was given to the state in 1921.

  • From £175 per room per night

From £175.00 per couple per night this room can be set up either as a Super King double or with Twin beds. Lie back in the luxurious bath and maybe enjoy a glass of champagne while watching the built in television. The exquisite en-suite bathroom also features a double walk in rainfall shower and large double wash handbasin and bidet. There is a dressing area and separate sitting room. The bedroom and sitting room both have fantastic views of Brough castle and of the fells beyond.

The suite is named after Lady Anne Clifford who inherited the Clifford estates on the death of her father in 1604 after a long legal battle. The estate had been left to her uncle in breach of an entail dating back to the the time of Edward II. She spent all her life defying her relatives, her husband, and even the king, in her fight for her inheritance. Against all the odds she won a resounding victory in 1643. As a result she inherited not only Brough Castle and its lands but estates comprising Brougham, Skipton, Pendragon and Appleby. She died in 1676 at Brougham Castle in the same room in which her father had been born.
