Harris Museum & Art GalleryPreston Category Museums & Galleries
A great day out for all the family, the Harris Museum & Art Gallery is a treasure trove of fantastic art and fascinating objects. Come and explore our remarkable collections of fine art, costume and textiles, ceramics and glass and history, all housed in a stunning Grade I listed building in the heart of Preston … and it’s completely free to visit!
Head up the dramatic staircase to explore two floors of art ranging from contemporary New Media Art to more traditional fine art of the 19th century, including water colours by JMW Turner and Samuel Palmer.
Don’t miss the Discover Preston gallery opened in 2012, and devoted to celebrating what makes Preston special. From the 13,500 year-old Poulton Elk to the Preston Guild (the last remaining Guild celebration in the UK), take a trip through Preston’s past exploring the stories, people and events that shaped our city.
The new and frequently changing exhibitions make sure there is never a dull moment and kids will be keen to join in all the kids’ activities and events that take place at the weekend and during school holidays. At the end of your trip to the Harris Museum & Art Gallery don’t forget to call in the café – the inspirational setting and views up to the Egyptian balcony will leave you in awe.
There is a packed events programme on all year round featuring talks, guided tours and workshops by curators and experts who are keen to share their passion – see the Harris Museum website for details. Much of the art and objects on display have been donated by or relates to the people of Preston and many of the collections hold great significance nationally and internationally.
