What's the connection between a Scottish king, killed in battle 500 years ago, Manchester's Peterloo Massacre of 1819, an internationally renowned Art Nouveau architect, and the invention of bottled beer? The answer is Middleton. This town, half way between Manchester and Rochdale, boasts an amazing collection of historic facts and they're all to be told at Middleton Golden Cluster.

Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon in September three surprising mediaeval buildings and a beautiful Art Nouveau church open their doors free to tell the amazing story of Middleton.

St Leonard's Church and the Queen Elizabeth I Grammar School date from the 1500s. Expert guides tell of connections to the Lindisfarne Gospels and St Cuthbert, The 1513 Battle of Flodden, and the invention of bottled beer.

Art Nouveau architect Edgar Wood's story is told at Long Street Church, and half-timbered pub Ye Olde Boar's Head is open from noon for refreshment and a look at its fascinating interior.
