Crummock WaterLake District Category Outdoor Activities, Nature & Wildlife
A half-mile level walk from Lanthwaite Wood car park is one of the most jaw-dropping beach-side views in the Lakes. The woodland (a haven for red squirrels) suddenly opens up with a view right down Crummock Water. The panorama includes Grassmoor, Rannerdale Knotts, Red Pike and Mellbreak.
A little further on is a sheltered shingle beach by a slate boat house which is a popular spot for wild swimming, or if you're feeling really adventurous, you can continue for the nine-mile round the lake walk which includes bog-hopping and scrambling.
Across Crummock from Rannerdale is Scale Force, the tallest single drop waterfall in the Lake District with a height of 170 feet (51.8m). The waterfall is set back in a gorge part way up Scale Fell, and there are several paths that lead up to the waterfall.
