Abbot Hall Art Gallery image

Abbot Hall was built in 1759 and after falling into poor condition, the Lakeland Trust restored the Hall in 1962 when it opened as an art gallery.

Abbott Hall showcases one of the most important collections of George Romney’s paintings in Britain as well as some of his sketchbooks and drawings. The gallery also has one of the most extensive collections of John Ruskin's drawings and watercolours.

The modern section of the gallery exhibits work by Ben Nicholson, Kurt Schwitters, Bryan Wynter, Sean Scully, David Hockney, LS Lowry, Graham Sutherland, Victor Pasmore, David Bomberg and many others.
